Technical manuals require a great deal of painstaking effort to
produce in such a way that the end user is enabled to fully
access information in a timely and accurate manner. Numerous
considerations have to be taken into account, such as the level of
readership, the method of delivery and the type of information to
The technical author's skill is in collecting information,
assessing its usefulness for the task in hand, and presenting it
in the best way possible for the end user.
This task is often performed in organisations by the staff
closest to the technical content, i.e. the engineers. These
skilled engineers are not usually the best people to be writing
technical manuals - and indeed often perceive it as an arduous task,
which can lead to hastily and poorly prepared documents.
Being removed from the day to day urgencies of a company,
external technical authors are able to concentrate on the task at
hand and carefully prepare the documents for the engineer's
approval. This process streamlines the generation and amendment of
documentation and frees up the engineering staff to do what they are
trained and paid for rather than them writing technical manuals.
